The concept of using multiple highly focused beams of ionizing radiation to destroy a lesion inside the brain was started some 50 years ago. One of the pioneers of such treatment was the late Lars Laksell of Sweden who subsequently developed Gamma Knife and coined the term radiosurgery. Valuable experience gained from use of Gamma Knife provides solid foundation for subsequent development of other radiosurgical systems, including the CyberKnife. |
