The Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Blood Bank and
Transfusion Service provides blood component and
performs laboratory testing for the whole hospital.
The blood units supplied to the hospital are
all donated through the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood
Transfusion Service. Meticulous tests have been
conducted on donated blood to screen for transfusion
transmitted infections, including HIV, Hepatitis
B and C, Syphilis and HTLV I & II. We use
the most advanced techniques for blood group compatibility
testing.
Autologous blood transfusion allows a patient
to save up his blood days or weeks before a scheduled
surgery, and use it at the time of the surgical
procedure. The technique would avoid many, if not
all, the risks associated with transfusion. |

| Chemistry and Special Chemistry |
|
|
The Clinical Laboratory is installed with the
ARCHITECTR Ci8200 analyzer from Abbot, which is
an integrated platform combining immunoassay and
clinical chemistry. By consolidating the two testing
capabilities, the system can run up to 200 immunoassay
tests and up to 1200 clinical chemistry tests
an hour. The Laboratory has also installed Abbott's
ARCHITECTR i2000SR Immunoassay System, which is
an automated immunoassay system that can perform
up to 200 tests per hour.
The ImmunoCAP machine is the standard for accuracy
and reliability for quantitative IgE testing.
It uses a technology that is a vast improvement
over the earlier RAST and modified RAST tests.
The mini VIDAS system has built-in computer that
allows the laboratory to run different tests at
the same time, each operating independently from
the others.
Drug toxicology tests can be performed by the Biosite
Triage Meter Plus Monitor, which provides rapid
qualitative or quantitative results for immunoassays
using blood or urine. |

| Hematology |
|
|
The hematology service is equipped with a fully
automated cell counter with true five-part white
cell differential and wide platelet detection
range. All samples would undergo a blood smear
review.
The laboratory has the newest line of coagulation
analyzers from Beckman Coulter called the ACL
ELITE Pro, which is capable of measuring Protein
C, Protein S, Antithrombin III and Lupus Anticoagulant.

| We offer a full range of microbiological services
including virology, aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology,
mycobacteriology, parasitology and mycology testing.
Rapid detection for bacterial, Cryptococcal, influenza
A and B antigens and Dengue virus antibodies are
also available.
