What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are very common non-cancerous tumors that develop in the fibrous muscular wall of the uterus.

2.

What are typical characteristics?

Typically, women who have uterine fibroids have more than one. They can range in size from very tiny (like a pea) or larger than a melon.

3.

What are the symptoms?

Depending on size, location and number of fibroids, they may cause:

  • Heavy, prolonged menstrual periods and irregular bleeding
  • Pelvic pain and pressure sensation
  • Back pain
  • Urinary frequency
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal bloating

We suggest you consult a doctor because each individual is different.

4.

What types of fibroids are there?

It depends on where they grow inside a uterus. Your doctor will discuss with you in detail after the check up.

5.

What are the causes?

The exact reason why uterine fibroids develop is unknown. It may relate to genetics or hormones.

6.

Is there any check up for this?

Yes. Usually, uterine fibroids are first diagnosed during a gynecologic examination. Sometimes your physician may send you for an ultrasound examination. It can detect if fibroids are present, as well as determine their precise location and size.

7.

Will my fibroids grow back?

Once fibroids are removed those particular fibroids cannot grow back. There can be tiny fibroids that cannot be seen or felt, and therefore cannot be removed. This is most likely to happen in someone who has many little fibroids. Recurrence is least likely in women with one or a few large fibroids than with multiple small ones.

8.

What does the check-up include and how long it takes?

It includes doctor consultation and examination fees. It takes about 15 minutes or more.

9.

What treatment is available and how much it costs?

If indicated, a number of treatment options available. These include medical therapy (use of drugs), surgical and non-surgical. The cost varies depends on individual's case and it is best to consult with your doctor.

Yes. It has been proven effective and safe in countries such as USA and overseas.

12.

Is UFE effective for multiple fibroids?

  Yes!

13.

What happens to my uterus after UFE?

The uterus remains intact unlike other surgical procedures. However, fertility cannot be guaranteed, but the success rate for pregnancy is much higher as compared with other procedures.

14.

What becomes of the fibroids after UFE?

When the blood supply to the fibroid is cut off, fibroid dies. The tissue of the fibroid softens and is slowly reabsorbed by the body over time.

15.

How much will it shrink?

It is estimated from research that over 3-6 months the fibroid will shrink by 50%.

16.
