HKAH-SR Introduces the First International-Grade da Vinci 5 Surgical System in Greater China

To mark the 55th anniversary of the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital – Stubbs Road (HKAH-SR), HKSH-SR has taken the lead in bringing the world-class da Vinci 5 (DV5) surgical system to Hong Kong – the first of its kind in Greater China. The introduction of this system aims to enhance the precision and safety of clinical surgeries, reflecting the Hospital’s ongoing commitment to excellence in clinical care, the application of advanced medical technology, and its people-centered philosophy. As one of the most widely used robotic minimally invasive surgical platforms worldwide, the DV5 surgical system is well supported by international clinical data, and has attained extensive certifications from authoritative bodies across multiple countries, offering Hong Kong patients treatment options comparable to those available in leading international medical centers.

Building on the structural strengths of the previous generation, the DV5 robotic surgical system delivers multiple design innovations and upgraded specifications in advancing the treatment outcomes:

  1.      Proprietary Force Feedback Technology for Reduced Surgical Trauma
The system instantaneously transmits the force and resistance encountered when surgical instruments contact tissue to the surgeon's control console. This allows surgeons to “feel” the softness, hardness, and resistance of the tissue, enabling finer and more precise control of applied force, reducing unintended tissue or clamping injuries. This new function helps surgeons further reduce the likelihood of injury to normal tissues during delicate procedures near critical blood vessels and neural structures, and thereby minimizing surgical trauma.
At present, only the DV5 surgical system is equipped with this type of force feedback technology in the medical industry.
  2.      4x Improvement in Image Resolution for Greater Clarity and Accuracy
Equipped with a newer generation high-definition 3D stereoscopic vision system, the pixel count is increased by 4 times compared with the previous generation, delivering more realistic color reproduction and clearer image details. The lifelike depth perception enables surgeons to more precisely identify fine anatomical structures such as blood vessels and nerves during surgery, helping them understand anatomical layers and reducing the risk of injury to normal tissues.
In addition, it also features fluorescence imaging that can display blood flow and tissue perfusion in real time, and supports future upgrades to a 4K visual system—continuously improving surgical precision.
  3.      FDA-cleared and Extensive Multi-Specialty Application
The system has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a wide range of surgical specialties, including Urology, General Surgery, Gynecology, Colorectal Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. It is also specifically authorized for complex structural heart procedures. HKAH-SR established the “Hong Kong Heart Center” in 1985, the first dedicated cardiology specialist center in Hong Kong, and has earned a widely recognized reputation in complex cardiac care.  The introduction of the DV5 surgical system will further advance the hospital's innovative developments in cardiology, offering precise surgical solutions for more complex cardiac cases.
  4.      Enhanced System Performance for Accelerated Postoperative Recovery
The system’s computing capacity has been increased by 10,000 times compared to the previous generation, optimizing overall operational efficiency and helping to reduce surgical time. Clinically, this contributes to reducing patients’ post-operative pain and lower infection risk—thereby facilitating faster recovery.
  5.      Global Adoption with Internationally Proven Excellence
Currently, the system is already widely used across the globe. Data shows that over 1,400 DV5 surgical systems have been installed worldwide, involving more than 12,800 surgeons across 10 countries – including Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic in the U.S., and the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan – with over 380,000 patients treated to date.
