EpidemiologyLower extremity edema is a common symptom amongst pregnant women. Clinically, about 80% of pregnant women will experience this symptom during pregnancy. What is Lower Extremity Edema? It refers to the accumulation of fluid in the lower legs that is caused by the pressure from the growing uterus on the inferior vena cava during the middle to late stages of the pregnancy. Blood cannot flow back to the main circulation from the legs easily and this leads to different degrees of lower extremity edema. If the condition is severe, doctors will need to conduct further tests to rule out the possibility of pre-eclampsia.
